Energy Audit Success Story - Case Study V

energy audit success story case study
By John A. Herbert, REA

Missing Fresh Air

We discovered a building full of Air Handling Units (PAU) retrofitted with a new control system comprising a variable speed drive (VSD) to vary speed of the fan, coupled with a Carbon Dioxide sensor.

Sensing the level of Carbon Dioxide indicates the number of occupants, therefore during low occupancy the quantity of fresh air can be reduced providing significant energy savings.

However, the location of the carbon dioxide sensor, intended to act as proxy for building occupancy was located in fact located in the outdoor air stream.

Analysing the VFD data found a constant frequency output, so the fresh air fan speed didn't modulated as intended, a fault that should have been noted during commissioning.

Conclusion

That is one EMO, out of hundred EMO's that provide cost savings! Call Kelcroft to order your energy audit today!
